ALAUSI – TRAIN NARIZ DEL DIABLO

Breakfast

We wil be transfer to Alausi to take the train of ”Nariz del diablo”

The trip begins in the small town of Alausí, which is hidden in the foothills of the imminent mountains of the Central Andes. A place whose fortunes were and are inextricably linked to the railroad that connected it to the coast and to the capital at the beginning of the 20th century.

The train leaves punctually, the whistle of the locomotive crosses the sharp Andean air. The convoy begins its journey downhill, tight around the contour of the hills, while we leave the city behind, and then, the cultivated land, until we find ourselves in the radiant and green field with the morning sun.

The journey from one world to another becomes more dramatic as we descend. The roads were carved, some literally by hand, in others they did use dynamite. And you can see the vertiginous view of the murky waters of the Alausí River.

Then we arrived at the most ingenious part of the road, where the engineers had to devise a new way of surrounding the mountain. They used zigzag paths on the side of the mountain, which allowed the train to go up or down. First follows a path and then the inverse. There is no doubt that it is a strange feeling!

Once we arrive in Sibambe, we have time to admire the mountain that we have just descended from below. It is a large green rock, in which some say they see a “devil’s nose”. But, in reality, the nickname has more to do with the tragically high death rate when the road was built, than with the form itself.
